Chrysler Issues Recall for 11,351 Vehicles
Chrysler is recalling around 11,351 vehicles from their 2011 line up that is affecting eleven of the twenty models that they have for sale. The recall is based on the fact that if involved in a collision, the steering column collapses improperly, which could cause more problems. Thus far, there has been no deaths or injuries reported that are related to the recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that the problem is with a rivet that was incorrectly installed that is causing all the problems. If the person were to get in a crash that involved the front end of the car, they could get more injury from the steering column not responding properly. So what are the affected vehicles?
All of these vehicles were made from the middle of April to the middle of May and include the Chrysler 200, Town and Country minivan, Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Caravan, Journey, Nitro, Jeep Compass, Patriot, Liberty and the Wrangler.
When the problem was first reported, the NHTSA stated that the problem could cause a loss of steering and lead to an accident. However, they later fixed that after they saw that this was indeed incorrect. Just how was the recall discovered? It was discovered by Chrysler who began checking a few vehicles and found that there was a missing rivet in many of the steering columns which lead to the recall to be placed. Those that are having affected vehicles are going to start to be notified in July.
Upon notification they will be advised to take this to their nearest Chrysler dealerships where the mechanics there will check the steering column and fix the problem. The problem has been identified as being caused by new employees at the Toledo, Ohio factory. They were improperly identifying the components that they were rejecting, which can happen for employees that are new on the job and have had little training.
