Ford Sues Ferrari
Ford has filed a lawsuit against Ferrari, since the Ferrari company decided to use the F-150 in one of their Formula racing cars. When people hear F-150, they automatically think of the best selling truck in the United States offered by Ford. Ford is afraid that with the similarities between the two being so close that people could associate Ford with the car.
The full name of the Ferrari car is "Ferrari F150th Italia". Ford filed the complaint with a US District Court in Detroit. In the report Ford maintained that Ferrari was hoping to get more public appeal because they are using the name of one that Ford has built. They are seeking that the company not be allowed to use the F150 in the name, as well as damages in the amount of $100,000 which falls under the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act that protects people from using something similar or the same of another company in hopes of gaining the appeal of consumers.
Ferrari responded that they were having a hard time seeing where Ford was coming from since they did not see much of a connection. The 150 was included as a celebration for 150 years of racing, while the F talks about what series the car is a part of. So Ferrari does not see why Ford is having such a problem with the car since the original intentions were to not sound like something that is similar to names already out there. So will Ford get what they want?
It's still to early to tell, however, with the Consumer Protection Act that Ford is filling under, there has been cases in which people get their way for something as not obvious as what Ferrari has done with the common Ford phrase. So more than likely, there will be something that comes out of the whole lawsuit. Whether Ferrari will be forced to remove the name of the formula car is debatable.
