French Automaker Gets on Electric Vehicle Wagon

PSA, an automaker based in France, has begun to make electric powered vans for the consumer market. This is a concept that many domestic automakers are considering, especially as they try to reach a larger demographic that need bigger vehicles, but still want the environmentally conscientious vehicles.

As of right now PSA has released around 250 vans to the French postal service, in order for them to use while on their rounds. This is something that many professionals have been talking about. Whether the use of electric cars is going to become mainstream or if it is going to be a concept that sticks with the corporate world. PSA is planning to make around 1,500 vans that will be released all through 2011. They have partnered with Venturi, who supplies the batteries and power train to name a few materials.

However, as it stands PSA and Venturi do not see the market for these types of vehicles increasing so fast that they cannot keep up with demand. This was a concern among professionals as Venturi is a small company. But, PSA does say that in the coming years they do plan to release more electric vehicles.

Nissan and Volkswagen are main competitors in the market that PSA is trying to branch into. Both of these companies are attacking the idea of electric cars with force, especially Nissan who has released the Leaf to the public and is getting corporate contracts for the vehicles. However, PSA does not seem to be taking such a strong approach to their electric line.

With the idea of electric cars beginning to be more common, the hope is that owning an electric car will become the next big thing. If more and more people utilize these cars, the amount of gases that are released into the air is going to noticeably decrease. However, all of these automakers have one big hump to get over, the cost of these cars.
