GM and Ford versus UAW
General Motors and Ford are set to enter talks with the UAW later this year, in which the companies are trying to get the UAW to allow them to close plants in order to bring in more profit. However, the UAW has a different mindset when it comes to this, and they are wanting to keep plants open in order to spur on the creation of more jobs. However, both companies have said that they are not going to dismiss the workers at these plants that they are considering closing. Instead, they would send these workers to different plants in order to keep them on with the company. Is the UAW going to go for this?
More than likely not, if the companies do this it means that people may have to travel much greater distances in order to get to a plant that they are working. And the workers at these plants are not going to be happy with such a decision either since it would mean less time at home and more time that they would spend on the road trying to get to work. However, nothing is concrete yet.
Other issues that the companies and the UAW are discussing is the fact that the companies are paying their employees on the lower tier of the payout platform, which was something necessary when the companies seemed to be going belly up in the economy. But, now that these companies are doing better, most people want to see about getting their pay back to what it used to be before the economy was struck down. This is the main issue that the UAW is talking about with the companies and one that is likely to heat up debates really fast since the UAW wants workers to go back to the regular pay schedule. The talks are preliminary right now, but they are going to heat up and heat up fast.
