GM Issues Recall

GM has been the recipients of good news lately, including winning the Motor Trend car of the year award for the Volt, as well as finding that they have lots of public interest in the release and selling of some of the GM stock. However, with all the good came a bit of bad news. GM has announced that it will be recalling 13,780 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne due to a steering fluid problem that could lead to the breaking of the steering fluid line.

GM says that the sedans could have a problem that is allowing steering fluid to leak out. This could cause massive steering problems that could lead to accidents or in worst case scenarios, the engine could catch fire. GM issued the recall after investigation two vehicle fires that occurred in late August, and finding that the power steering fluid was to blame.

The recall is only in effect for 2010 through 2011 models and engineers have concluded that the problem is caused by the alternator cable or the starter rubbing against the power steering line, causing friction which could lead to the power steering line beginning to leak or break all together, causing steering loss or the liquid to leak onto a hot engine, resulting in a fire. GM has halted production of these vehicles while they check what is still in factories to ensure that this will not be a future problem.

The big question that most people are asking themselves is will this effect GM? Of course, no one knows for sure what consumers will think, but if GM takes care of this recall to the satisfaction of customers, most people believe that they should not see a drastic drop in sales. GM has done the responsible thing here and taken credit for this problem and issued a recall before the problem became a dominant complaint among those owners.
