Photos Leaked of New Mercedes SLS Roadster
It was rumored that Mercedes was working on a SLS Roadster, however, it was just speculation before pictures were leaked to the media. The pictures were of a prototype, but from the images, it seemed that the car was completely ready for production.
So what changes can people expect with the SLS Roadster when compared to the SLS AMG? First off, the most noticeable change will be the SLS Roadster’s ability to convert to a topless car. In turn for this aspect, the trunk lid is much taller to accommodate the electric convertible roof. Many have suspected that customers will be giving up much needed trunk space for this new addition.
In addition, the SLS Roadster will be sporting the classic Mercedes sedan handles instead of the pop out pulls that the SLS AMG shows. The door will also stretch further down the car, however the car still has the long hood that people associate with the Roadster.
Despite what many people believe, the SLS Roadster will not be replacing the SLS AMG. They will both be sold side by side so that consumers have more options to choose from. It is suspected that the SLS Roadster will cost around $200,000 when it is finally released.
The main aspect that most people have been curious about is what type of engine the SLS Roadster will be equipped with. It is suspected that the SLS Roadster will keep the 563-hp 6.2 engine that Mercedes is removing from other cars. This will give the car around 479 pounds torque. It is suspected that the performance of the engine will be hindered a bit because of the extra weight that the drop top mechanism will add.
Those who are interested in this car will have a long time to wait. Despite Mercedes having a working prototype, the new car is not expected to be seen live until the Frankfurt car show in September 2011 since it will be a 2012 model. At that time, Mercedes will be competing with some stiff competition, including the Audi R8 Spyder and the Porsche 911 Turbo.
