For starters, when you go to fill up the gas tank, this is a great time to make sure that you are checking the fluid levels. You will want to look at the coolant tank and make sure that it is up to the line in which is where it should be. Keep in mind, that if this is really hot, that the fluid may be a bit higher than usual. You should be able to see to make sure that the coolant is not discolored. If it is, it may be time to flush the system and have it filled back up. You should also take this time to look at the air filter, this is something that could affect your gas mileage. You want the filter to look clean and not full of debris, if it is, go to your local auto store and buy a new one and replace it, it is a simple fix and one that you can afford. Also check your oil level. Does it look good or is it low? Keep in mind that if the car is due for an oil change that the oil is going to be almost black, and is a sign that it is time to change it.
You should also make sure that the tires are good. You will want to make sure that they are all on the same pressure level, and you can check this through a hand held gage, that is going to be a few bucks at your local store. If they need air add some slowly and recheck periodically to make sure that you do not over inflate as this can be just as dangerous as not having enough air. The person is also going to want to check the tread of the tires. A good idea is to take a penny and with the face facing you put it in the grooves of the tire, if you can make out the majority of the head, then you know that it is getting close to time to changing the tires.
