UAW and GM Talks Should Go Well

The labor talks that are set to take place between General Motors and the union, look as though they are going to go better than planned. And GM has the honor of thanking themselves for making this happen. A representative of the union stated that the investments that the company has made into its plants would go a long way in making the talks go smoother for everyone. Everyone pointed out that when the company is going better that more people are wiling to work with them on the aspects that they are worried about. This does not mean that the company has to be making tons of more profit, it is a matter of improving the conditions for workers now and adding more employment to the market, something of which GM is striving to do.

In factories that are based throughout Detroit, the company has said that it is investing around $2 billion into the plants there in order to improve the lines and provide more jobs in the local economy. Add into the fact that the plant in Orion Township in Michigan is being saved from the chopping block, which is adding a huge favor to the talks that are going on with the UAW. They have also announced that they are investing around $131 million in the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant. In addition, the Toledo, Ohio plant is getting an investment of around $204 million and 250 jobs will be kept at the plant in order to build a new eight speed transmission.

The UAW takes all of these factors into consideration when they are negotiating rates for workers and so forth. However, one factor that is affecting the talk is the foreign automakers that are working in the economy. Unless, the foreign automakers get on board with the UAW, the UAW is going to have to keep negotiating lower working rates for workers in order to keep the jobs in the United States.
